A Design Trend for Halloween and Beyond

by Desiré Greene

When it comes to the holidays, I’m often more excited, and dutiful, about putting up decorations than taking them down. After all, decorating is fun. Un-decorating? Well, not so much. This makes me a natural candidate for décor that works year-round. And what works better for Halloween and beyond than an occasional human skull? Appropriately spooky and always on trend, accessorizing with skulls is a design ‘do’ for those who dare!

Hamlet, Halloween, or McQueen: Take your pick!

Showing off a collection of skulls put most in the mood for delicious treats or Halloween shenanigans. But there’s no need to stow away your skull décor once the 31st has come and gone. Disperse them about; hang art prominently; and if anyone questions your design choice, have an explanation at the ready. Intellectual types can call it an ode to Hamlet (Alas, poor Yorick!), while the fashionable set may site Alexander McQueen’s famed skull motifs. Either way, you’ll sound remarkably cosmopolitan and far from tasteless.

Disperse Them About: Skull Objects

Keep in mind that I’m not talking about actual human skulls, but, rather replicas, life-size or other. As the trend continues, more and more options are available. I, of course, prefer skulls cast in bronze or brass. I love the contrast of something so shocking in a gleaming finish.

Hang Them Prominently: Skull Art

Skulls needn’t be reserved for tabletops and bookshelves. A simple sketch or painting will add just the right amount of edge to any décor. In fact, I have my own piece of skull artwork that I simply adore. A silver skull set against a matte, black background, it’s shockingly chic! Try a print like these examples to infuse your own space with a bit of ghoulish glam.
