Refresh Your Home for Fall

by Lynn McGowan

The dog days of summer are behind us and fall is finally here! The crunchy leaves, the sweet smell of cinnamon, and all of our favorite coffee shops rolling out their festive treats. Now that the temperatures are cooling off and our daylight hours are shortening, it is time to make our home a cozy and comfortable place to spend our free time. Making a few small changes can instantly add warmth to your space, and create a more inviting environment for you and your family.

Tip #1: Declutter Your Space

Your home deserves a fresh start this season. While some of us have not fully returned back to the office, or have received the news that we will be working remotely until the end of the year, now is the perfect time to declutter your space and help refresh your mindset for the uncertain future. I suggest tackling one room at a time by clearing everything out of the space and separating items into three piles – keep, donate, and trash. Be honest with yourself – if you haven’t used an item in the last 12 months, it is no longer serving you, and only taking up precious space in your home. If items are still in good condition, consider dropping them off at your local shelter, or selling your secondhand items online. With so many platforms out there, let your trash become someone else’s treasure.

Tip #2: Add in Cozy Elements

Nothing beats curling up on the couch to watch your favorite feel-good movie on a chilly fall day! Now’s the time to pull out those throw blankets and pillows from storage for maximum comfort. Use this opportunity to add a splash of color, by changing out throw pillow covers or purchasing a new throw blanket in a more autumnal hue. Don’t forget about scent, too! Candles and wax warmers can have a big impact on your space. Consider burning sweeter scents like vanilla or cinnamon in the kitchen and dining areas, and more neutral scents in the living room.

Tip #3: Paint!

Paint color can have such a huge impact on the look and feel of your home. Consider a room in your home that hasn’t been refreshed in a while; maybe a small powder room, or a guest bedroom – that you haven’t put your personal touch on just yet. Now is a great time to grab a fairly inexpensive bucket of paint, and transform that space with a color that’s more your style so it blends in nicely with the rest of your home. The best part? Paint isn’t just for walls! That hand-me-down dresser in your guest room would look great after a little sanding and a fresh coat of paint or stain.

Whichever way you choose to refresh your home for the upcoming season, be sure to create a space you truly enjoy spending time in! Does your home need more than just a few little upgrades? Are you ready to move into your dream home and leave your outdated home behind? Compass Concierge is a great way to refresh your home and get it ready for sale – without any upfront costs!
