Though one of the country’s oldest cities, Philly has become a mecca for modern design. In fact, it was Dwell Magazine that led me to this latest design inspiration — Lokal Fishtown. Lokal is a boutique hotel chain offering innovative experiences and uncommon interiors. For their new Fishtown location, Lokal enlisted design firm True Hand Society to transform 6 apartment-style rooms (aptly named “Jawns”) into modern getaways with a distinctly Philly vibe.

When planning their newly constructed townhouse, these Baltimore homeowners envisioned a stylish kitchen infused with character — not cookie-cutter finishes. They achieved their dreams with the help of designer Bria Hammel. Bria mixed gray cabinetry, satin-brass hardware, and Nuvolato marble to create a glamorous kitchen perfect for entertaining. As someone who collects African-inspired art and textiles, I find this latest home tour particularly inspiring. Designer Sophie Ashby successfully blends modern and traditional with accents of Afro-themed prints, sculpture, and art. The balance is just right. Take the living room for example. An oversized print by Nigerian photographer Lakin Ogunbanwo hangs prominently atop a modern bookcase. Its well-edited shelves styled with accessories of all styles. I’ll undoubtedly incorporate some of Sophie’s tricks in my own home.
