Upgrade Your Outdoor Entertaining Space

Now that summer is here, it’s time to utilize your outdoor space! Small and inexpensive elements from accent cushions and table linens to potted plants and herbaceous borders can transform any backyard into your own personal oasis. Here’s how to get the most out of your backyard.

Step 1: Clean and Prep your space. Break out the power washer, hose, and heavy-duty cleaners to give your outdoor space a good clean. Start from the top with any overhead coverings like pergolas, awnings, and umbrellas before working your way down to the furniture and then to the ground. Be sure to check the tags on your outdoor furniture to give them a proper clean without accidentally ruining the fabric or material. Most outdoor fabrics can be spot cleaned with a non-bleach based multipurpose cleaner.

Step 2: Deep clean your grill. Although your grill has most likely been covered all winter, it still needs a good interior clean before you begin cooking. To clean your grill, first start by turning the burners on low and warming up the grates, then take a heavy-duty grill scraper and a wire grill brush to the warm grates to scrape any excess grease and food particles off. When you are finished, turn off the grill and allow everything to cool before removing the grates and soaking them in a bucket of warm, soapy water for a few hours. Once the grates have soaked, take a wet sponge and wipe off any excess grime before rinsing with clean water. Heading back to the grill, take a clean soapy sponge and start lathering the exterior of your grill, removing any built-up residue before finally taking a stainless steel cleaner and microfiber cloth to polish off the grill. Now that your grill is sorted, it’s time to set the table.

Step 3: Decorate! Embrace your surroundings when choosing a theme for your outdoor tablescape and accents. Consider the colors and textures of your landscaping and home’s exterior when purchasing your big-ticket items like a dining table and seating, as these pieces are a larger investment and will create the foundation for your desired look. We suggest a neutral color that compliments the color and style of your home for the focal pieces while adding color in through accent pillows, cushions, placemats, and dinnerware. Consistency in accent color and textures will provide a luxury-resort style feel. Don’t forget to use natural elements such as water features, potted and hanging plants, or a herbaceous border to tie your space together.

Step 4: Lighting and Music. With the proper lighting and music, you can set the tone for your outdoor living space. Whether you want a zen and private oasis feel, or a summer pool party, the right music and lighting can help you transform your backyard space from ordinary to extraordinary. Consider solar-powered uplighting around trees and tall shrubbery, as well as post lights to line a walkway or patio.

Step 5: Enjoy your space! Kick off your shoes, turn up the tunes, and grab your burger off the grill, because it’s time to unwind and enjoy your little slice of heaven!
